The secret orchard

When bergamot season was over last year, I looked around for other fruits to experiment with. I noticed a citrus grove a few blocks away from my house, unusual since Sonoma County is too cold for most citrus.  I stopped and talked to the farmer, who said it was the remains of an old U.C. Davis citrus field test station–and that it was full of obscure varieties of citrus that no one had ever heard of and that I could take as much as I wanted and save him the trouble of picking them off the ground.
